Opera Mini mobile browser crossed 50 million users

Opera Mini, the world’s most popular mobile browser, has crossed the 50 million unique monthly users mark in January 2010. This milestone proves the popularity of Opera Mini compared to other Rival mobile browsers, as users seek out the Opera Mini experience over other options by downloading it on their mobile devices.
In just the past year, Opera Mini has seen unprecedented growth in every geographic location, with the number of users growing 150 percent from 20 million monthly unique users in January 2009 to 50 million monthly unique users in January 2010. These are not users who have just downloaded Opera Mini, but people who use the browser on an active basis, making it a market leader ahead of any other mobile browser.
Opera Software had earlier reported that India ranks third among the top markets for Opera Mini, overtaking China. The company does not share country-specific numbers but has reported that page views in India have gone up 202 per cent since September 2008. The number of unique users has also gone up by 61 per cent in this period.
According to Gartner, Inc., by 2013, mobile phones will overtake PCs as the most common Web access device worldwide. With the speedy rise in the number of people browsing the Web from their mobile phone, users are picking the best software to surf the real Web on their devices — and that’s where Opera Mini comes in.
That statistic also explains the exponential growth of Opera Mini in the last few months. To reach its first 10 million users, Opera Mini took 28 months from January 2006 to April 2008. However, the last 10 million has taken only three months from November 2009 to January 2010.
Opera Mini is a lightweight Mobile browser developed by Norway-based Opera Software and can be downloaded free of cost on handsets. The browser offers compression from the Opera server, which shrinks web pages by up to 90 per cent before loading them on the device, for faster internet browsing and lesser data usage.

1
Opera Software, maker of the world’s most popular mobile Web browser, plans to reveal Opera Mini for iPhone. The Norwegian company said it will demonstrate the new browser at the 2010 Mobile World Conference (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain. Opera Mini is renowned for its compression technology, which results in significantly faster Web-page loading and reduces data surcharges. With favorite desktop features in its arsenal, such as tabs, Speed Dial and the password manager, Opera Mini is designed with usability in mind.
Jon von Tetzchner, cofounder of Opera Software, said he is “thrilled” to offer the preview and added that the software provides a “fast, feature-rich” experience for iPhone users. Opera on the iPhone brings the company “one step closer” to its mission of “bringing the web to the world,” he said.
Opera Software says it has developed a version of its Opera Mini browser for Apple, Inc.’s iPhone. Opera plans to demonstrate the browser at the Mobile World Conference and indicated it is much better than Apple’s Safari. With Apple under FTC pressure, Opera expects its Opera Mini 5 will be approved for Apple’s App Store but Question is whether Apple will approve Opera as an iPhone application on its App Store. Apple currently only accepts browsers that run on the WebKit engine – the same engine that powers Apple’s Safari browser
